Your data, your choice

Your choices

If you are happy for your data to be used to support research, then you don’t have to do anything. The Wessex SDE keeps your data safe and private.

Donating your data ensures that researchers have more complete and representative information.

We understand there may be times when you would prefer that your health and care information was not used for research or for health and care service planning.

There are currently two ways that you can opt-out:

National Data Opt-Out

Stops any of your NHS data (from hospitals and other care providers) being used for research and planning across England, except in certain situations. For example, when required by law. To opt out online or find out more, visit Make your choice.

Local Data Opt-Out

Stops your NHS data from being used for research and planning within the Wessex Secure Data Environment only.

You can find out more about the National Data Opt-Out here.

The rest of this page explains the Local Data Opt-Out.

What happens with the Local Data Opt-Out?

If you choose the Local Data Opt-Out, your NHS data will not be used for research or planning through the Wessex SDE.

This option only applies to the Wessex SDE. Your data can still be used nationally unless you also select other opt-outs. The National Data Opt-Out will stop all your NHS data from being used for research.

Your choice to opt out will not affect the care or treatment you receive from the NHS in any way.

If you do choose the Local Data Opt-Out your data won’t contribute to local research aimed at understanding and improving treatments for conditions such as cancer, dementia, and chronic diseases, or planning better local health services.

Researchers rely on comprehensive health data from many people, reflecting the diversity of our community. Complete data sets help ensure research outcomes accurately reflect everyone’s health needs, leading to more effective and inclusive treatments and healthcare services.

If you choose not to opt out, you do not need to do anything, and your health records will automatically be available for research and planning. You can be reassured that researchers never see personal confidential information like your name, address or NHS number.

When your choice about sharing data from your health records does not apply

There are situations where your opt-out won’t apply. According to guidance from NHS Digital and the Information Commissioner’s Office, your choice doesn’t affect:

  • Individual care: Health professionals will still use your data to provide direct care.
  • Public health emergencies: Your data may be used during emergencies, such as a pandemic, to protect public health.
  • Legal requirements: Sometimes, data sharing is legally required or mandated by the courts or specific legislation.

Your Local Data Opt-Out applies solely to data accessed through the Wessex SDE for regional research and planning.
