LPHD – Linking Police and Health Data on Road Collisions

Lay Description

Using the Pre-Hospital and Research Audit Network (PRANA) Registry, the LPHD project aims to:

  • Link, analyse and access data to meet the requirements of the HRA and other relevant data providers
  • Improve the accuracy, quality and linkage of the STATS19 data collected by the DfT and reported by police forces in Great Britain
  • Better understand and identify the total number and impact of RTCs in the UK.
  • Provide sufficient insight and detail to inform new policy development, decision-making and research to reduce the incidence and impact of Road Traffic Collisions (RTCs)

The LPHD project team will assess the capabilities of this linked data for understanding the causes, outcomes, and costs associated with road traffic collisions through comprehensive analysis.

Our research will demonstrate the benefits multi-departmental work, linking previously siloed data, to allow researchers to see the full RTC pathway. This will allow new research into the policy requirements and decision-making processes that would help to form national and international best practice and guidance and ensure that sufficient priority is given to casualty reduction.

Public Benefit Statement

LPHD is strongly aligned to delivering public benefit and the Wessex SDE’s Strategic Priorities as outlined below:

  • Reducing serious injury and death is a key driver for DfT to highlight how changes in policy can pro-actively reduce the incidence of RTCs in the UK
  • Linking these datasets for the first time will allow us to create an incredibly valuable resource that will enable new types of research and for policy makers to better understand and improve decision making and road safety measures
  • Users of the DfT’s road casualty statistics will have a better understanding of the number and trends in road casualties and contribute to improvements in the collection of data by police forces.
  • Once this data is linked in the SDE we will have a first in a lifetime opportunity to define the full impact and incidence rate of RTCs
  • This project will provide an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the value of shared multi-government departmental working and collaboration with our SDE and the SDE Network as whole to improve national policy and decision-making.
  • Better data on the true number of collisions will ultimately help policy makers and others to have a better understanding of the clinical outcomes of road collisions and develop policies to improve road safety and reduce the number of casualties.
